Actriz de cine estadounidense. A mediados de la década de 1920 era corista en Broadway, a la vez que obtuvo su primer contrato en Hollywood. Interpretó a la muchacha de espíritu libre en películas como Vírgenes modernas (1928) y luego, en la época de la Depresión, personificó a mujeres oportunistas en filmes dramáticos como Gran hotel (1932) y Mujeres (1939). Con sus cejas oscuras, sus hombreras y su histérica intensidad, se reinventó a sí misma como una sufriente heroína en Alma en suplicio (1945, premio de la Academia) y en melodramas sicológicos como Amor que mata (1947) y Sudden Fear (1952). Entre sus películas posteriores se cuentan Queen Bee (1955) y ¿Qué fue de Baby Jane? (1962).
